Happy 183rd Birthday, Jules Verne

You rock.

Today is the 183rd anniversary of Jules Verne’s birthday. I’ve always thought that he was born in the wrong century, that be belonged in the space age. Then again, I’m sure that if he’d lived today, he would still be looking to the future and created wonderful sci-fi.

Verne was interested in travel and exploration from early childhood. When he was twelve, he snuck on board a ship bound for India. He was caught and his father was mad. Verne said, “I shall from now on only travel in my imagination.”

And what an imagination it turned out to be! I have travelled on his imaginary journeys around the Earth in eighty days, to the center of the Earth and, of course, twenty thousand leagues under the sea.

The first of Verne’s books I read was Journey to the Center of the Earth. The funniest is Around the World in Eighty Days. Love them both. The most magic one, however, is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

Joyeux anniversaire, Monsieur Verne! You rock.
