Declaration of Compromise

[letter to someone]

To whom it may concern,

I for one believe that we are way passed the point of permitting
ourselves to relinquish responsibility for our own actions,
whether taken in the name of history or vengeance or personal pursuit of power,
or because of our sense of superiority or inferiority,
or some inherent divine right.

We are better than this.

(c) 2009- Z for short. (Written during the Gaza War.)

Prompt: Write a poem consisting entirely of things you’d like to say, but never would, to a parent, lover, sibling, child, teacher, roommate, best friend, mayor, president, corporate CEO, etc. This is actually one of Charles Bernstein’s proposals in his list of poetry experiments.
