The Straight vs. the Rocky Road to Erebor

[persona poem]

Hobbit PosterIn a land so full of green,
would we be lesser dwarves
if we took the straight road –

        rather than crossing mountain paths
        so close to cliff edges
        that we slip off,

        or traverse narrow bridges
        over deep abysses
        inside dark mountain halls
to get from point A to point B,

        with bruises on our bodies
        from falling and rising
        and trying and failing,
        and winning, too –

as we rush towards the Lonely Mountain
to reclaim our Erebor?

(c) 2013- Z for short.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems as if the poor dwarves in The Hobbit constantly find themselves on the outer edges of cliffs. From the plateau – a narrow one, of course – at the end of the movie, where the eagles put them, we can see the Lonely Mountain far away, but pretty straight ahead. Not that our heroes will be allowed to take the straight road in the next movie, either.

Prompt: Write a persona poem – that is, a poem in the voice
of a particular person who isn’t you, like a superhero or supervillain.
