Marginalia: What was he thinking?

with 2 comments

NaPoWriMo day 24: Write a poem inspired by the marginalia of medieval manuscripts.

Maybe the lights in the scriptorium were low
and he was bored
and cold
and pined for wine

Maybe he felt particularly naughty that day
or wanted to give a finger to a pompous clergy

Or maybe there was an empty spot
at the bottom of the page that needed to be filled

Who knows what he was thinking, the monk,
when he decided
that a drawing of
a creature shooting an arrow
right into another creature’s rear
was the perfect accompaniment
to the Scriptures

Maybe he just wanted to leave his mark
for the posterity

The image above is from The Rutland Psalter and shows a blemmya with his head beneath the shoulders shooting an arrow into a monopod’s behind.

  1. These pictures are great, aren’t they? I think we came to similar conclusions…boredom has a lot to answer for.

    • They are amazing and so full of details. Grotesqueness and beauty side by side. Seems Terry Gilliam and Monty Python found some inspiration there.
