Silence

leave a comment »

NaPoWriMo day 26: Write a call and response poem, like those used in many sermons, hymns and sea shanties. Basically an interactive exchange between one main speaker and an audience. Shanty example: Haul on the bowline, our bully ship’s a rolling, / Haul on the bowline, the bowline Haul!

What if the response from the audience is an utter silence?

…the silence
where it used to be a thunderous applause

Orion’s belt

leave a comment »

NaPoWriMo day 24 is inspirational: Write a “mix and match” poem, mingling fancy and not so fancy words, to make the everyday seem poetic and keep the poetic language grounded.

ORION’S BELT

I look up and try to think of the mightiest word
to describe the multitude of stars in the firmament
Heaven’s own navigation lights for lost sailors to find their way home
I know I always feel safe seeing Orion’s belt in the night sky,
still in line, Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka
I smile wryly at my own thoughts and shiver a bit
It will be colder tomorrow
I hope the tomatoes will make it this year

Sonnets are difficult

leave a comment »

NaPoWriMo day 23. Sonnet is today’s topic, and I am really not there yet. “Don’t try to write like Shakespeare” is a good advice for anyone who wants to write sonnets. David B. Axelrod at poetrydoctor.org says that the “test of a contemporary sonnet is to follow the form precisely, but make it sound like normal, conversational speech.” He says we should not go for easy rhymes, but rather rhymes/words that express what we mean. So, I am sweating away trying to come up with 14 good lines, each with 10 syllables, and a rhyme pattern of a-b-a-b c-d-c-d e-f-e-f g-g.

My not yet finished sonnet is called “Reassembly.” I look at my mirror image and she looks coldly back. With one swift look at me, she calls my bluff and sees that I am not living my life to my fullest potential. I scream, she screams and the mirror breaks. “Scattered fragments of myself all over.” I cannot “piece them together as they used to be.” I have to find my real purpose in life to be able to “glue me back to life.” I am not the only one inspired by Dylan Thomas’s Do not go gentle into that good night. My sonnet ends with this reference to Thomas: “No, Dylan T, I will not rave and rage, / but gentle go through life towards old age.”

Clichés, I know. This is ruddy difficult.

Happy Earth Day!

NaPoWriMo day 22. Happy Earth Day! Remember to write kind words to the world today.

Circle of recycling:
Jotting down ideas for new stories
in carefully chosen notebooks
recycled from books written
from ideas jotted down
in carefully chosen notebooks.

He painted the rain purple
and let us laugh and bath in it.

RIP, Prince.

Fairy tale

leave a comment »

Day 21, and I am inspired by the NaPoWriMo prompt: Write a poem in the voice of a minor character from a fairy tale or myth.

fairy tale

no matter how many times you kiss them, frogs are just frogs,
or so she used to think once upon a time,
the former frog legs seller who went frog hunting
and found herself standing with an one-legged prince in her hand

Rendezvous

leave a comment »

Day 16. Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt was to fill out an “Almanac Questionnaire” with details about a specific place. 23 categories, ranging from weather and flora to an alley to the view from your window. I did not do it, but it gave me a big city feeling. And why not after dark…

RENDEZVOUS

After dark,
when the sleepless and the restless
are drawn to the back street joints,
I know he’ll be there

I put on a black hat
and ruby-red lipstick
and go to him
